Maureen O'Hara
Maureen FitzSimons, born 17 August 1920, died on the 24th of October, 2015) was an Irish actress. She was a popular actress in Hollywood from the 1940s through the 1960s. Her natural redhead was and was famous for her passion-driven but sensible heroines, often in Westerns and adventure films. Charles Laughton was the first to notice her star power and brought her to Hollywood. She worked with John Ford and John Wayne who was a friend for a long time and director. O'Hara was raised in Dublin, Ireland by a Catholic family. She was determined to be an actress at the age of 10. She was trained by the Rathmines Theatre Company from the age of 10, and then at the Abbey Theatre beginning at 14 years old. Screen tests were given to her, however it did not go as well as expected. Charles Laughton, however recognized the potential in her and agreed to allow her to be a part of his production Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn (1939). She relocated to Hollywood that same year to appear with him in the film The Hunchback of Notre Dame and was offered an acting contract by RKO Pictures. She would go on to have a lengthy, highly successful career, earning her the title "the Queen of Technicolor". In films like How Green Was My Valley (1941) it was her first collaboration, The Black Swan with Tyrone Power (1942), The Spanish Main with Sinbad the Sailor (1947), the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947) along with John Payne (and Natalie Wood), and Comanche Territory (1950), she appeared. O'Hara first appeared in Rio Grande (1950), along with John Wayne (the actor with whom she has the most connection). The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (57), and McLintock followed. (1963) and Big Jake (1971). Such was her strong chemistry with Wayne that many assumed they were either married or together. O'Hara began to assume more motherly roles in the 1960s , as she grew older. She was in films like The Deadly Companions (1961), The Parent Trap (611) and The Rare Breed (1966). In 1971, she announced her retirement from the film industry. However, she returned 20 years later to play with John Candy in Only the Lonely (1991).
